About the ELA6 Test

What is the "ELA 6"?

The "ELA 6" is the English Language Arts Test given by New York State Education Department to 6th grade students as a part of the requirement needed for promotion to the 7th grade.

When is the ELA 6 given?

The ELA 6 is given over three consecutive days in January. Please ask your child's teachers for exact dates and times of the exam.

What Sections comprise the ELA 6 exam?

The exam is takes place over the course of three days, and is divided in three parts:

DAY 1

Session 1 - 50 minutes

Reading Section/Multiple-Choice

  • Read 5 passages of 1-2 pages each.
  • Answer 25 multipe-choice questions.

DAY 2

Session 2, Part 1 - 45 minutes

Listening Section/Written Response

  • Two to three short answers
  • One long response

DAY 3

Session 3 - 60 minutes

Reading Section/Written Response

  • Read two passages related in subject or theme
  • Write two to three short-responses
  • Write one long response
