About the ELA4 Test

What is the "ELA 4"?

The "ELA 4" is the English Language Arts Test given by New York State Education Department to 4th grade students as a part of the requirement needed for promotion to the 5th grade.

When is the ELA 4 given?

The ELA is given in the winter of the fourth grade (late January or early February), depending on state guidelines and your school district's calendar. Please ask your child's teacher for exact dates and times of the exam.

What Sections comprise the ELA 4 exam?

The exam is divided into four sections given over a period of three days:

DAY 1

Session 1 - 45 minutes

Multiple Choice:

  • Read five to six selections
  • Answer 28 questions

DAY 2

Session 2, Part 1 - 30 minutes

Listening:

  • Two short answers
  • One long response

Session 2, Part 2 - 30 minutes

Writing:

  • Write a story, letter, journal entry, article, or essay

DAY 3

Session 3 - 60 minutes

Reading and Writing:

Read two selections

  • Write one to two short answers based on the first selection
  • Write one to two short answers based on the second selection
  • Write a long response based on both selections
